Gifts for a New Mom’s Self-Care

One thing we know in midlife is how to take care of ourselves. We don’t always take the time to do so, but if we know a young woman who is becoming a mother for the first time, we can share these gifts with her, either as a gift basket or singly, depending on what we know about her needs. The ideas for the best gifts for a new mom’s self-care came from a young nurse friend of mine.

She gives a variety of these items to her pregnant friends, including her sister, my daughter-in-law. She has a very cute, and inappropriate, name for the gift, which I had not heard of before, but made me laugh. (Scooter care is what she writes on the card, so, just take away the “s”).

It doesn’t matter what you call it; giving birth is hard work, and a woman’s body needs time to heal. The following gifts are for that. I also include a section for moms who didn’t give birth, but are moms anyway, by way of adoption, fostering, or some other way. They need help and care, too, just not for their nether regions.

The days for us to give birth are over, but our daughters, their friends, and the daughters of our own friends are in the thick of baby season. I love giving gifts that are useful, so the idea of this post spoke to me.

We see you, young mamas, and want to ease your way into the wonderful life of motherhood!

Gifts for a New Mom’s Self-Care: Books

During every era of my life as a mom, I have turned to books for help. Here are a few that might help a new mom through these days.

Gifts for a New Mom’s Self-Care: Nether regions

This is something that, as a new mom, I hadn’t thought about at all. I knew the basic mechanics of having a baby, but not what the aftereffects would be. I am sure that women are better prepared these days. All of these supplies are helpful in the days and weeks after delivery.

Gifts for a New Mom’s Self-Care: GI tract

Here are a couple of things that might help things get back on track inside a new mom’s body.

Gifts for a New Mom’s Self-Care: Nursing

Not every mom will nurse, and every mom’s experience with it is different. Some love it, some hate it. Some nurse for months or even years, some will only nurse for a few days. There is no right or wrong. Here are some tools that will help no matter what the mom decides.

Gifts for a New Mom’s Self-Care: Clothing

Some moms will want to just wear their own clothes, but there are truly some things that were developed for comfort. Here are a few choices.

Gifts for a New Mom’s Self-Care: Fun Items

The great thing about all of these gifts is that you can make a gift basket and decide what was the most helpful to you as a new mom or what you wish you could have had!

But, if you are not into DIY-ing it, then here are some great gift boxes put together for you on Amazon. And, here are some great gift box options from Etsy.

The best thing we can give our own daughters and daughters-in-law is respect. Respect their wishes. Even if we don’t agree. Even if we think she is wrong. Even if it means we aren’t going to see the baby much. It is up to the young parents.

The best thing to do in these situations is to agree. When we are able to see them, be helpful. and over time, hopefully, as they get used to parenting, we can see the child more. But, maybe not! There were times when I wish I had put my foot down more with both sets of our parents here. It never got ugly, but there were definitely some tense times.

Remember, they are figuring it all out, and sometimes it is easier with no outside interference!

Much love to all the mamas -old and experienced, new and green, and anything in-between!
