Best Health Practices for the 60+ Woman: How do you stack up?

I recently read an article by Women’s Health, 8 Simple Strategies to Slow Aging In Your 60s -let me sum it up for you if you don’t want to read the whole thing.😎 All of these things will contribute to Best Health Practices for the 60+ Woman.

(Hard to believe that I turned 60 in July -I used to think that was so old, but I am thankful to be here especially since I have lost several friends already that were only in their 50s and 60s!)

I’m putting this list from the article in the order that works for me, but I will leave nothing out!

Best Health Practices for the 60+ Woman

Are you implementing best health practices for the 60+ woman?

Best Health Practices for the 60+ Woman #1: Water

Get a water bottle you love, and keep it filled throughout your day. -This is definitely something I need to work on!

Here is a bottle I love to use!

Best Health Practices for the 60+ Woman #2: Strength Training

Do strength and resistance training 3-4 times a week. I joined a gym last fall, and I am feeling so much stronger! My goal each week is to go 3x, and I am pretty regular with this. Here is a post we wrote about some basic equipment to have on hand! Add in cardio, even just 15 minutes daily will do you a world of good!

Best Health Practices for the 60+ Woman #3: Greens

Eat more greens. -I am terrible about this. I just don’t like veggies. So, now, after some research, I now drink my greens!

Best Health Practices for the 60+ Woman #4: Sleep

Get at least 7 hours of sleep. I am great at this!

I need about 9 hours to function well. Test this out for yourself. Go to bed on a weekend at a normal weeknight time. Don’t set an alarm. See what time you naturally wake up. I have tested this many times, and it’s about 8.5 to 9 hours for me!

Do you have a good bedtime routine? It helps me so much to do these things, and it makes my mornings so much easier!

Best Health Practices for the 60+ Woman #5: Mindfulness

Schedule mindfulness into your day. Mindfulness is the practice of focusing on the present moment. It takes some practice, but basically you need to empty your mind of everything,

Doing some yoga or simple exercises can be helpful. Make it be a simple routine that you know by heart so that you are not thinking about anything including the exercises.

You can also sit somewhere in a comfortable position and empty your mind.

Build some time into your day for this, and you might see improvement in your stress level and outlook on life. Along those lines, find a hobby that you can lose yourself in for hours at a time!

Best Health Practices for the 60+ Woman #6: Alcohol

Check your drinking, as in alcohol. More and more research is showing that there is no benefit to drinking, and possibly can cause multiple health problems.

Best Health Practices for the 60+ Woman #7: Doctor appointments

Have you been to the doctor lately? If it’s been more than a year, make an appointment. This includes any doctor that you need to see regularly: dentist, gynecologist, cardiologist -depends on your health needs.

Best Health Practices for the 60+ Woman #8: Ask questions

When you are at the doctor, ask questions. Tell the truth.

Make sure your bloodwork is healthy, you may be low on Vitamin D for one…

Best Health Practices for the 60+ Woman #9: To-do list

Create a to-do list: Think “brain dump” for tomorrow. Get out all the things. I like to write down calls I need to make, emails to send and places I need to go to. Anything that I don’t want to forget the next day. Just get all the things down on paper or in a note on your phone. Then, you can always go back and number the items the next morning as you plan the day.

This, more than anything, has helped me relax and be able to sleep -knowing that I have got things out of my brain where they might be forgotten in the moments of a busy day…

Best Health Practices for the 60+ Woman #10: Practice gratitude

I hadn’t thought of this, but I think that is because I feel like my goal for a long time has been to just talk to God all the time. I thank him for pretty things I see along my day, ask for guidance when I’m frustrated, and thank him again for all my blessings.

If you aren’t regularly praying, I recommend it -especially thankfulness! The article suggests putting a timer on your phone for times to do this. I will have to try it!

Practicing gratitude is a great practice for building up the positives in your life. If you are intentionally looking for things to be grateful for, you will find them. As you end your day, you will be surprised by the fact that there is SO MUCH to be grateful for! Try to think of at least three things you are grateful for from your day or just in general. I usually fall asleep as I add to my grateful list in my head.

Your entire outlook will improve, and if you are in a slump or a down place, gradually, with this practice, you will notice an improvement. Start now, start wherever you are. Start on January 1st or June 18th or November 3rd. Gratitude is a special way to gain a new and wonderful perspective. Here is our wonderful NPP gratitude journal!
