5 Ideas for Celebrating Easter with Adult Children
Your adult children are coming home for Easter! Yay! But, how do you make it a memorable and fun weekend for them? The first thing to remember when celebrating Easter with adult children is that they are nostalgic for their childhood. Our young adults are somewhere between desiring to be completely on their own and still wanting to feel like they can come home anytime and feel at home. Giving them a combination of adult experiences and childhood nostalgia is the way to go.
Last Easter my daughter brought 3 of her best friends home from college for Easter weekend. This group had first planned to come for Easter weekend their freshman year in 2020, but that did not happen as everyone was already home and online for school. So, for their senior year, we made it happen. We had a beautiful weekend and I will share my ideas for celebrating Easter with Adult Children below.

Ideas for Celebrating Easter with Adult Children #1: Give them some independence
Don’t start right in with the fun the moment they step off the plane or out of the car in the driveway. Our daughter brought 3 friends home. They arrived laughing in the driveway Thursday evening. It was awesome that they had Good Friday off from school, so it gave us some extra time. They spent Thursday evening and Friday hanging out with our daughter showing them around Tulsa.
If your child has not arrived with a carload of friends, they may want to meet up with high school friends or just hang out at the house watching movies or whatever helps them unwind.
Ideas for Celebrating Easter with Adult Children #2: Dye Eggs
Yes, really. Boil some eggs (an egg cooker makes this really easy), get out the PAAS Easter Egg Decorating kit, and spend an hour dying eggs. I took pictures and sent them to each girls’ mom. It was fun. They laughed. They talked. And they dyed those eggs.
They are the absolutely sweetest girls ever! (Please pardon the open dishwasher in the background.)
Ideas for Celebrating Easter with Adult Children #3: Easter Clothes, church, and pictures
Take pictures in the front yard in their cute spring clothes and take them to church.
Ideas for Celebrating Easter with Adult Children #4: Easter lunch
There are 2 ways to think about Easter lunch. One is the traditional one where you cook and put out a big spread. I have done this in the past. If you are down for that, go for it, OR you can do what we did. Go to a non-crowded restaurant and have lunch. We ate at our usual Sunday lunch Mexican place.
If they have to travel Sunday afternoon or evening, a quick lunch may be the best option. Why? So, you have time for idea #5!
Ideas for Celebrating Easter with Adult Children #5: The Egg Hunt
Adults like games and what is an egg hunt? A game! Of course, adults like games with really good prizes even more.
We live on over an acre, so that makes an egg hunt a true hunting experience. We have also had to hunt eggs in the house some Easters because you never know what Easter weather is going to be in Oklahoma. We were blessed with a beautiful spring day last Easter.
There are several ways to do the eggs. One is to fill small eggs with candy and money. Very few young adults will not hunt eggs if there is money involved!
This year I bought 24 Jumbo Easter eggs. I filled them with gift cards and other prizes. Each girl was told to find 6 eggs. We also hid small eggs filled with candy. They could get as many of those as they wanted.
Here they are on the starting line for the hunt. I gave them baskets my kids had used growing up. I also bought little inexpensive Easter buckets for them to put their loot in to take home. You could also use Easter gift bags.
Opening up their eggs to retrieve their prizes is the best part!! The Jumbo Easter eggs mostly held gift cards to places like Starbucks, Sonic, and Chick-Fil-A. For variety, I also included tubes of Aquaphor lip balm and larger candy bars. Each girl also received a chocolate bunny because everyone needs a chocolate bunny for Easter!
It was a wonderful weekend! I would host this group of girls any day of the week, so I hope they will come back ;)
