This is a new monthly series which we will update each year as the particular month arrives. Much of each post will be good from year to year, and because parenting is often challenging, we want to present tools and strategies that might be helpful, in this case for parenting in March.
Here are things that we’re learning and loving in the month of March! We will talk about a few things that we are learning and loving in our lives right now. This may include recipes, books, movies and tips for life in the middle of the sandwich, etc.

Parenting in March: Learning
Are you wondering what you should be teaching your teen about money? I have found this awesome resource! It’s called 5 Things Parents Must Teach Kids About Money. There is also Millionaire by 51. I have heard the guy speak who developed these 2 programs. He’s a bit dry, but his ideas are easy to implement, and so useful as we teach our teens!
Cost of attendance– COA- this includes tuition and fees, also housing if you plan to live on campus, but not any other costs such as transportation, etc.
Parenting in March: Books to read
Dear Mrs. Bird by AJ Pearce
I just finished this book, and I loved it. Set in Great Britain during WW2, Emmy is a war correspondent wannabe. In short order, she inadvertently becomes a junior typist for a women’s magazine, and she is jilted by her longtime fiancé. These two things combine to bring her down, but her dearest friend, Bunty, and a new handsome acquaintance are just the things she needs to perk her up.
I listened to this one, and really liked the narrator. Emmy is a very likable character, and I could feel myself settling into her young 20-something self for a set of adventures.
And, I just found out in the writing of this post, that it is the first of four books in a series! I cannot wait to read!
A NPP reader recommended The Miracle Morning: The Not-So-Obvious Secret Guaranteed to Transform Your Life to me. I looked it up, and it turns out I read it a few years ago. This is the new updated version. Lots of great advice for getting your day started!
Parenting in March: Grandparenting
Did you know that there is a golden rule of grandparenting? Well there is, and here you go!
You should offer unconditional love and support while respecting the parents’ rules and boundaries. In other words, be a fun and loving grandparent, but leave the parenting to the actual parents.
Easier said than done. Our rule for when our grandkids are here is that we really try to just have fun with the kids.
If we disagree with something we see or hear in our son and daughter-in-law’s parenting, we stay silent. There are times we can (and might) bring it up later, but for the most part, we just enjoy the littles, and let their parents figure things out, knowing that when we had littles, we were figuring things out as we went, too.

America: The Story of Us: Basically what it says, an interesting series about American history.
Unforgotten: If you like crime shows, but not the violence, then this one is for you. British show that I have loved!
Parenting in March: Game to play
Ticket to Ride -This game is so much fun! It is all about travel and earning points for the longest routes you can take. Visit some cities while you are stuck at home. One way to extend would be to look up some of these places while you are playing!
There are lots of versions which I did not know! Here are a few…Ticket to Ride -Europe, for younger kids there’s Ticket to Ride-First Journey, and Ticket to Ride-Rails and Sails.
Parenting in March: Gadgets to try
Have you heard of Scrubdaddy? Guys! This is the greatest thing! I got one as a hostess gift, and thought, “What the heck?” But, seriously, I LOVE it! They are everything that the packaging says and more. Plus, they are so cute:) Try it out!
Hair clippers -We have this model, and the boys have given each other haircuts. We even trim our dog with this. It is super easy to wash all the separate pieces between uses.
Parenting in March: Clothing
March is a great time to go through your winter clothes, and look for stains and other imperfections. If you need to purge a little, this is a good time to replace those items because many will be on an end-of-season sale as they add in new spring clothes.
